The Mental Health Challenges on Survivors of Bullying

Updated: Sep 11, 2022

Bullying is a harmful behaviour towards another person with intention to cause physical or emotional damage. Bullying may be through done verbally, non-verbally and even online, known as cyberbullying. Examples of bullying include name-calling, making threats, mocking or intimidating others, deliberately excluding, shoving or pushing, and sending hateful messages.

Bullying can cause tremendous harm to the survivor’s mental health. Research shows that survivors of bullying often feel vulnerable and at risk of having mental health challenges. Repeated experience of being bullied often leads to depression, anxiety, eating disorders and suicidal ideation. The stress from being bullied can also lead to other health issues such as sleep problems, headaches and feelings of fatigue.

If unresolved or unaddressed, the trauma of bullying leaves the survivors with long-term social and emotional damage that affects their adult lives. Survivors of bullying often struggle with low self-esteem, which hinders their work or school performance and relationships.

If you are a survivor of bullying, it is essential to know that you are not alone. Please reach out to a mental health professional. Processing the impact of the bullying with a trained counsellor can help you develop a stronger sense of self and identify protective strategies to move forward.
